What is the e-vignette for Hungary?

The Hungarian vignette, also known as e-Matrica, allows for electronic toll collection via the vehicle's license plate. When applying, umlauts in the license plate must be replaced with the corresponding letters. For example, GÖ becomes GO for Göttingen.

We recommend purchasing the e-vignette online before your trip. If you accidentally enter a toll road without a vignette, you have up to 60 minutes after entering the toll road to purchase one. No additional fees apply during this time.

When purchasing the e-vignette, you will receive either a control slip to sign or a confirmation message if you purchased online. It is important to check the receipt for accuracy of all information, especially the license plate number, nationality mark, validity period, and vehicle category. Any discrepancies should be reported immediately. The receipt also contains the name and address of the point of sale, the place and time of purchase, and a unique identification number for authorization. For security reasons, you should keep this receipt for two years to provide evidence in case of future claims.

The toll for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

Since January 2024, motorhomes with a permissible total weight of over 3.5 tons have been subject to distance-based electronic toll collection under the HU-GO system, similar to buses and trucks. Therefore, purchasing a vignette is no longer necessary.

Toll payments can be made in two different ways: For occasional drivers, it is recommended to purchase a single-trip ticket before the trip, which is available online in our shop, for example. For more frequent trips, however, registration in the HU-GO system is required. This allows toll payments to be made via a credit system that works with an on-board unit (OBU). The OBU can be obtained from authorized toll managers.

Different vehicle classes

The allocation to the appropriate fee category is based on the information in Part 1 of the registration certificate. The following fields are particularly important: field “J” (vehicle class), field “F.1” (permissible total weight) and field “S.1” (number of seats, including driver’s seat).

To be classified in category D1, the entries in field J must indicate type M1, the maximum permissible weight in field F.1 must not exceed 3.5 tonnes, and the maximum number of persons in field S.1 must be 7. Otherwise, a category D2 vignette is required.Older motorhomes registered as special motor vehicles (class 16 or 21 in field J) can also be classified as class M1 (passenger car) and are eligible for the D1 vignette, provided the other criteria are also met.

The costs for the e-vignette in Hungary are divided into different vehicle classes, which we would like to introduce to you in more detail below:

  • Class D1M: Motorcycles
  • Class D1: Cars up to 3.5 t and up to 7 seats
  • Class D2: Motorhomes
  • Class B2: Buses
  • Class U: Trailers of D2 and B2

Penalties for violating the vignette requirement in Hungary

If you drive on Hungary's motorways and expressways without a valid vignette, you risk a fine due to the existing vignette requirement. For cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes with a permissible total weight of less than 3.5 tons, the fine is currently around €50. For fines, the fine is considerably higher, at approximately €215. If the affected drivers fail to pay within 60 days, the fines are increased. Tolls are collected by the Hungarian Motorway Collection Agency (Hungarian Motorway Collection Agency). Numerous permanently installed cameras are in operation throughout the country to verify the validity of the digital vignette.
