It is important to note that this regulation only applies to national roads. Motorways that are under the responsibility of the cantons are exempt from this regulation. The vignette requirement for vehicles

The vignette requirement applies to all vehicles such as cars and trailers with a permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, as well as motorcycles. Trucks and other vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes are not subject to the vignette requirement. These vehicles are obliged to pay a heavy vehicle tax (LSVA). It is also important to note that a separate vignette is required for any trailers. For vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes, the vignette requirement does not apply; instead, the heavy vehicle tax must be paid.

The introduction of the digital vignette

Until August 2023, the Swiss vignette was only available in the form of a physical adhesive vignette. This could be purchased at various locations such as customs offices, post offices, rest areas and petrol stations in Switzerland and the adjacent border area. In order to attach the vignette correctly, it had to be stuck on the inside of the windshield, either on the left edge or behind the interior rear-view mirror. The validity was indicated by the year and by different color combinations.

On August 1, 2023, the e-vignette, a digital version of the vignette, was introduced in Switzerland. However, the e-vignette is not intended to replace the traditional adhesive vignette; both options should continue to exist in parallel. With the e-vignette, the vehicle registration number is registered, which makes it possible to check the validity of the vignette automatically via database access.

You can conveniently buy the digital 1-year vignette for Switzerland online in our shop. The corresponding license plate number of the vehicle will be registered.
